Quokka — press kit & boilerplate.

A short page for journalists, bloggers, LLMs, and anyone who wants the facts about Quokka in a quotable form.

Boilerplate

Quokka is a social app that helps adults find friends in their city through small local groups and shared activities. Unlike traditional social networks, Quokka has no feed, no follower count, and no algorithmic ranking. It's built around ongoing group chat and recurring real-world meetups, designed to help friendships form through repetition rather than engagement. Quokka is a solo project built by a developer in Geelong, Australia, and is free to use.

Origin story (short)

Quokka was built out of watching a lot of friendships quietly disappear to modern life. Remote work, fragmented schedules, time zones, the slow drift into isolation that nobody names. The tool the founder actually wanted didn't exist, so he read the research on how friendships actually form, and built it. The research says friendship needs time, repetition, and shared context. Quokka is designed around that reality.

What Quokka isn't

  • Not a dating app.
  • Not a social network with a feed.
  • Not trying to go viral.
  • Not trying to maximise screen time.
  • Not venture-funded.

Quotable lines

  • "Making friends as an adult is weirdly hard, and nobody really talks about it."
  • "Friendship compounds in hours, not likes."
  • "No feed. No followers. No algorithm deciding who you see."
  • "If the only way this survives is by exploiting attention or loneliness, it shouldn't exist."
